The purpose of life: Do something to be remembered

March 31st, 2009 · Filed under Deep thinking

Take a look around you. There are different kinds of people walking around the globe. One wants to become rich, other wants to be famous, others don’t care about all this. In my personal opinion, they all have something in common: Everybody wants to be remembered!

How did I reach this conclusion? I looked at what different avenues in life “promise” and why people pursue them. Let’s take a look at a couple:

Wealth

Most rich people, voluntarily or not, do something to make sure people, either surrounding them or globally, know that they are rich. They help the poor, they build schools, they travel around the world in a yacht, they buy expensive goodies, and the list goes on. Most rich people ask for attention of a greater audience. Those who don’t, usually just want to touch the hearts of a select group, be it family, close friends or that single mother around the corner with 8 children.

Be it by a small group or by the whole world, all these people want to be remembered.

Fame

Fame actually holds a promise of wealth. Those who pursue fame fall in the category of people who want the attention of a wide audience. Consciously it may be about the wealth, but it’s always tainted by some form of wanting to be remembered.

Singers hope their music is remembered always. Same goes for actors, writers, bloggers, well, any celebrity. Having your name added to any Hall of Fame, or reaching the top of any chart, means that your name will be remembered for generations to come, if not forever.

Religion

All religions have a promise for the afterlife. Most have a destiny for “good people” and one for “bad people”. Some say good people go to heaven, others say they will be resurrected in a paradise on earth, others believe they will reincarnate. Bad people on the other hand are supposed to go to “hell” according to some, or die and just never come back, or reincarnate into a lesser being.

These systems encourage to do all in our power to be remembered by The One in Charge (God, Allah, Nature or whatever he/she/it is called).

Loved ones

Most people are driven by wish to be remembered by their family and friends. People get married, spend their lives together in the hope that they will have enough impact on the life of the other that they will be remembered. Parents try to give their children the best they can realize in their power in the hope that the children will appreciate them, remember them, in the end. People make friends so more people get to know them, so they can be remembered.

Someone… Anyone?

There are those in live who don’t need all the fame and attention of large masses. They sometimes don’t even need the attention of their own family. But even these people have someone in their life by whom they want to be remembered. Usually this is the closest person to them.

Conclusion

Everybody wants be remembered. I do, you do, your neighbor does… Everybody does! If you think you don’t, take a close look at your past. You will definitely recognize something you did to be remembered by.

So, in my opinion, the purpose of life is to do something to be remembered when you’re gone.

    Very interesting point of view.
But it begs the question: what about the hermit in the forest who doesn't even want to talk to passers-by? Does he want to be remembered? And, if so, how does he want and expect that to happen?
  • Those people usually create a bond with Nature, so they want to be remembered by Nature. Remember, a guy like this was not always "Tarzan". There was probably a time where he wanted to be remembered by people.

A friend of mine always says "When you get to know people, you learn to love animals". Nature, in this case.

    Interesting.

I do agree for the most part, but I believe underlying this is the fact that people want to add value. They want to know they are making a difference whether it be the world or themselves.

As far as doing something to be remembered, people love positive recognition. The greater the magnitude the better. Some people are content with just self-recognition.

  • Interesting point of view. Putting your view and mine together you get: People want to be remembered for making a difference.

Think about it: there has never been someone who has added value to life without being remembered by someone. The only way you can add value is by doing something that will be remembered, even if you do it anonymously.
  • This is true even on a smaller scale. Just think of the when you meet someone you haven't seen for a while or only met once. One of the first thinks you say is "remember me from......" and you don't feel very good if the person has forgotten you. Now this is what happens in a social gathering.
So why would life be any different.

I don't know about that - If someone I haven't met in a long time has forgotten me, I don't blame them, because it means whatever I did (or didn't do) back then simply wasn't important enough to warrant remembrance.
    But that's just me.
  • Doing things for the sake of being remembered, in either a good or bad light, suggests living today for future impact. Quite honestly, I do what I can today to bring some value today to someone, somewhere, besides myself.

Whether they recognize it, let alone remember it, makes no difference to me. I don't care what other people think when it comes to living my life. The only opinion I care about is my own. If I'm happy and proud of the day's events, most likely I made someone else smile in the process.

Thanks for the opportunity to share.
  • @Rafiek and @Snow: Thanks for your input.

I think that when we near an end, some crossroad, the wish to be remembered becomes more apparent. During normal life it may seem like we don't care about this matter, but there will be times when the wish "shows its face".

Hey, I'm dropping you another comment. I wondered where you are? I notice this is the most recent blog post, and you haven't been active on Twitter either. I tweeted you BTW, just to ask where you were, a few weeks ago. I hope whatever is keeping you from blogging is something good and satisfying. Hope to see you around!
